As India’s smartphone market shifts towards higher-value devices with advanced AI and camera features, realme unveils its 16 series, blending flagship-like capabilities with accessible pricing amid evolving consumer demands.
India’s smartphone market is moving away from simple volume growth and towards higher-value devices, according to IANS. The report says buyers are now weighing AI features, camera quality, battery life, durability and design alongside price, while India’s annual shipments are expected to reach about 151 million to 153 million phones in 2025 despite broader economic and supply-chain pressures. That shift is helping mid-range devices win attention from younger consumers who want features once reserved for premium handsets.
Against that backdrop, realme is positioning its Number series as a bridge between flagship-style features and accessible pricing. The company says the line is aimed at creators, gamers and social-media-heavy users, with the new realme 16 series built around design, battery life and imaging. Within that range, the 16 Pro is being pitched at power users and content makers, with a 200-megapixel periscope camera intended to deliver detailed zoom performance more often associated with top-tier phones.
The standard realme 16 5G, which has already been launched in India, centres on photography and endurance. TechGraph reported that it uses dual 50-megapixel cameras, including a Sony IMX852 rear sensor and a 50-megapixel front camera, plus tools such as a rear selfie mirror, Aura Ring Flash, gesture controls and voice countdown. The device also supports AI-based editing features, including AI Inspiration, AI StyleMe, AI LightMe and AI Instant Clip, while realme says its LumaColor image engine is designed to improve skin tones and colour balance.
Specification details from realme’s own listings show a 6.57-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 4,200 nits peak brightness and 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut support. It is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 6400 Turbo chip, runs realme UI 7.0 based on Android 15 and comes with 7,000mAh battery capacity, 60W charging and IP69 water resistance. The phone is available in Air Black and Air White, with the latter weighing 183g and measuring 8.1mm thick. realme also says the Air Design language is intended to improve balance and in-hand comfort, particularly for gaming and video capture.
The wider 16 series includes the 16T 5G and the upcoming 16x 5G, which realme says is aimed at buyers who want strong battery life, camera capability and value under tighter price ceilings. The broader strategy reflects a clear market reality: in India, the next phase of smartphone competition is less about shipping the most units and more about selling devices that feel more capable, more durable and more personal.
