Redmi’s upcoming K100 Pro Max handset showcases a massive 9,070mAh battery, rapid charging, and advanced display features, highlighting a trend of prioritising hardware capabilities through strategic design trade-offs similar to Apple’s past moves.
Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand is preparing a handset that is difficult to ignore on paper: the Redmi K100 Pro Max, a China-only model expected to be unveiled on August 11, pairs a 9,070mAh battery with 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. According to PhoneArena, the phone is being positioned as a high-end showcase for battery capacity, charging speed and display technology rather than a routine update.
The larger trend is familiar. Apple’s removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack in the iPhone 7 helped create internal room for components such as optical image stabilisation, the Taptic Engine, a bigger battery and improved water resistance, as MacRumors, Macworld and PhoneArena have all noted in past reporting. That design choice became one of the most copied moves in the industry, along with Apple’s decision in 2020 to stop bundling a power adapter and EarPods with new iPhones.
The Redmi K100 Pro Max appears to follow that same logic of using design trade-offs to push hardware further. PhoneArena says the phone’s 6.9-inch OLED display will refresh at 185Hz and reach a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, while the camera system is expected to include a 200MP main sensor, a periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and a 50MP ultrawide camera. Under the bonnet, it is said to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and a D2 graphics co-processor aimed at improving frame rates and reducing latency in games.
The handset is also expected to offer 27W wired reverse charging and 22.5W wireless reverse charging, adding to its appeal as a power bank-like device for other electronics. Price details are due when the phone is formally launched, but PhoneArena says it will not be sold through US carriers or retail chains, which means American buyers would likely have to import it at the risk of band compatibility issues and the lack of a US warranty.
