Apple edges closer to launching Alibaba’s Qwen AI in China amid early support material leak

Apple has subtly advanced its plans to integrate Alibaba’s Qwen AI model into Apple Intelligence in China, with a support document briefly indicating a forthcoming rollout, sparking regulatory and market anticipation.

Apple has quietly moved a step closer to bringing Alibaba’s Qwen artificial intelligence model into Apple Intelligence in China, after publishing support material that showed users how to connect the service on macOS. Reuters reported that the guide briefly appeared on Apple’s Chinese support site before being removed, suggesting the company may have posted it before the rollout was fully ready.

The documentation explained that eligible users could opt in to use Qwen through Siri for more detailed answers to some requests, including the analysis of photographs and documents. Apple also said its Writing Tools could draw on the service to generate text or images from a prompt, extending the system-level AI features that the company has been building into its software.

According to the support material, the feature would be available to users running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later in China, subject to local market terms and a required login to the platform. The material also said Qwen would not use generated content to train its models, an important condition for users and regulators in a market where data governance remains closely watched.

The timing appears to match a broader approval process that has been under way for weeks. TechCrunch reported in July that China’s Cyberspace Administration had cleared Apple to launch Apple Intelligence in the country with Alibaba’s Qwen model, while MacRumors said the approval opened the way for a wider rollout across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. Alibaba has also indicated that Qwen is set to power Apple Intelligence features for Chinese users across those platforms, although Apple has not yet confirmed a public launch date in China.
