Leaked images suggest Xiaomi is developing a large, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8-style foldable with a wider display, a major software overhaul, and imminent release plans, signalling a move towards more premium, tablet-like foldables in a competitive market.
Xiaomi appears to be preparing a wide-format foldable that closely follows the design language now spreading across the category, with leaked images showing a large inner display, rounded corners and very slim, even bezels. The handset is expected to resemble Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 in overall shape, marking another sign that the market is moving away from the tall, narrow foldables that dominated earlier generations.
The device is widely tipped to be called the Xiaomi MIX Fold 5, although some reports also suggest the company could use the Xiaomi 18 Fold name. According to leaks first published in May and June, the phone’s internal display will use a 4:3 aspect ratio, giving it a more tablet-like layout when opened. That would put Xiaomi in line with other manufacturers, including Apple, OPPO, Vivo and HONOR, that are now said to be working on similarly wide foldable devices.
The latest images also point to HyperOS 4, which appears to be pre-installed on the phone. Earlier leaks about the software suggested a major visual overhaul built around transparent panels, depth effects and smoother animations, a direction that appears heavily influenced by Apple’s Liquid Glass approach. Other reported changes include stacked widgets and a broader redesign of the system interface, as well as a Leica-inspired colour treatment.
If the current rumours prove accurate, Xiaomi’s foldable could arrive in China in early September and possibly before the Xiaomi 18 series, rather than alongside it. That timeline remains unconfirmed, and there is still no clarity over whether the device will reach global markets. Even so, the leaks suggest Xiaomi is moving quickly to compete in what is becoming a more crowded and more design-led foldable segment.
