Apple’s $3,199 foldable iPhone Duo opens pre-orders as launch supply faces pressure

Apple will begin taking orders for its first foldable iPhone on 16 October, with prices reaching $3,199 and deliveries spanning more than 98 markets in two launch waves.

Apple will open pre-orders for its foldable iPhone Duo on Friday, 16 October at 5 a.m. Pacific time, with first deliveries due on 23 October in more than 70 countries and regions, according to Apple’s product page and newsroom announcement. The company says a second wave of availability will follow on 30 October in an additional 28 markets, extending the launch beyond the initial roll-out.

The device enters the market at the top end of Apple’s pricing ladder. In the United States, the base 256GB model is set at $1,999, rising to $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB, as shown on Apple’s official listing. The phone is offered in two finishes, Star White and Night Sky, and ships with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen.

Apple’s launch materials also emphasise the environmental profile of the handset. The company says the iPhone Duo uses 35% recycled content, including 100% recycled cobalt in the battery, and is manufactured with 60% renewable energy. It also says the device meets its standards for energy efficiency and safe chemistry, signalling a broader effort to frame the model as both a premium and more sustainable product.

For customers who want to secure one quickly, Apple has already switched on its Get Ready process, which lets buyers choose colour, storage and payment details in advance. MacRumors said this preparatory step is advisable because supply may be tight at launch. The site also reported that Apple has recently released iOS 27.1, meaning early buyers may need to complete a software update during initial setup because the phone runs iOS 27.1 as standard.

Behind the industrial design, the iPhone Duo appears to be a more ambitious engineering exercise than a simple folding shell. PCMag, citing Apple engineers, reported that the A20 Pro chip in the handset delivers the same performance as the iPhone 18 Pro processor but adds a second display engine to drive both panels at once. The publication said Apple has also fitted a vapour chamber three times larger than the one in the iPhone 17 Pro, alongside flexible graphite tubes routed through the hinge to move heat across both halves of the device. That arrangement, according to the report, is intended to deliver around 35% better graphics performance under sustained load than the iPhone 17 Pro, despite the thinner body.
