Apple’s first foldable iPhone launches in South Korea at a premium over Samsung

Apple’s inward-folding iPhone Duo has gone on sale in South Korea, with prices starting at 3.29 million won , significantly above Samsung’s rival Galaxy Z Fold8.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone went on sale in South Korea on 23 October, drawing customers to the company’s Myeong-dong store in central Seoul as the device made its formal debut in the market. The launch in Korea came alongside availability in the US, Japan and more than 70 other countries and regions, following pre-orders that opened on 16 October. Apple said a further 28 markets will receive the handset on 30 October.

The new model, called the iPhone Duo, adopts an inward-folding book-style design. When closed, it uses a 5.4-inch external display; when opened, it offers a 7.6-inch internal screen intended for video viewing and multitasking. Apple says the handset measures 5.2mm when unfolded and 11.3mm when folded, with a weight of 254g.

According to Apple’s announcement, the phone is powered by the A20 Pro chip and uses a vapour chamber cooling system together with dual batteries. The company says video playback can last up to 31 hours on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. It has also fitted a nano-texture finish to the inner panel to reduce glare and visible creasing. The camera system on the rear consists of two 48-megapixel lenses, while the handset relies on Touch ID on the side rather than Face ID and supports eSIM only.

In South Korea, Apple has set the starting price at 3.29 million won for the 256GB version, rising to 5.09 million won for the 2TB model. The phone is offered in Star White and Night Sky. That pricing places it well above Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, whose 256GB model costs 2.2781 million won, underlining how aggressively Apple is positioning its first foldable at the top end of the market.
