Apple’s new LG camera tilts itself into privacy when you return home

The £179.95 LG Indoor Cam Plug-In brings a 160-degree view, 2.5K video and a physical privacy tilt mechanism to Apple’s expanding Home Collection.

Apple’s new LG Indoor Cam Plug-In is positioned as the entry point to the Apple Home Collection, with a US price of $199.95, or £179.95 in the UK. According to Apple’s store listings, it will be sold in the US, Canada and the UK from December, and it is the only LG camera in the range offered in Essence White. MacRumors reported that the wider Apple Home Collection, developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, will roll out in stages, with some accessories arriving later in the launch window.

The camera’s defining specification is a 160-degree field of view, which LG says is designed to capture more of a room in a single frame. Apple describes the device as a 2.5K indoor camera with a wide-angle lens, low-light colour night vision and infrared night vision for darker conditions. The combination places the model squarely in the premium end of Apple’s smart-home offering, despite its status as the least expensive camera in the collection.

Apple says the camera supports people and pet detection, but that feature depends on a home hub. The company lists HomeView, HomePod, HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV 4K as compatible hubs, while LG says the new products require an Apple home hub. The camera also supports one-tap setup with iPhone, Thread, Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and two-way audio. Apple says built-in storage can keep recordings going even if Wi-Fi drops out.

The most unusual feature is a privacy tilt mechanism. Apple says the camera can tilt up and down automatically when a user checks on the home, then return to a downward position once the first household member comes back. It can also be moved manually through the Home app or with a button on the camera’s support column. LG says the physical controls are meant to give users a clearer, more intuitive way to stop monitoring when it is not needed. The camera can be mounted on a table, wall or ceiling, and ships with a USB-C cable, screws, anchors and a manual.
