Asus’s 3.7kg flagship gaming laptop combines Intel’s Core Ultra 9 290HX and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU with the first claimed 18-inch 4K 240Hz mini-LED screen.
Asus has pitched the 2026 ROG Strix Scar 18 as a no-compromise gaming notebook, combining Intel’s Core Ultra 9 290HX processor with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU in a chassis that is unapologetically large and heavily styled. In Asus’s own announcement, the company says the machine is aimed not only at gamers but also creators, developers and other power users who want desktop-class performance in portable form.
That ambition comes at a price. On the Croatian market, the top configuration is listed at €6,399, reflecting the pressure of high memory and graphics costs in the premium laptop segment. Asus also offers a lower RTX 5080 version for close to €1,000 less, but the flagship model is the one that pushes the design and hardware envelope furthest.
Visually, the laptop is as aggressive as the ROG name suggests. The lid carries the AniMe Vision panel with 810 LEDs, allowing animated graphics or custom text, alongside a lit ROG logo and an illuminated base. The machine also uses a broad venting layout tied to Asus’s ROG Intelligent Cooling system, which draws air through the sides and underside and channels it across the chassis, including through the keyboard deck.
The display is one of the main selling points. Asus says it is the world’s first 18-inch 4K 240Hz mini-LED panel, branded as ROG Nebula HDR, with 2,000 local dimming zones, a peak brightness of 1,600 nits and support for G-Sync, FreeSync and ROG Nebula ELMB. The panel is also rated for 100% coverage of DCI-P3 and sRGB, plus 94% of Adobe RGB, which places it well beyond the needs of typical gaming and into serious content-creation territory.
Inside, the Scar 18 pairs 32GB of LPDDR5 memory with a 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD, and Asus says the chassis supports tool-free upgrades through its Q-Latch design. Connectivity is extensive, with HDMI 2.1, two Thunderbolt 5 ports with DisplayPort and power delivery, three USB-A ports, Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. The laptop also includes a 90Wh battery, four speakers and a per-key RGB keyboard with 2mm travel, although the 3.7kg weight and 35mm thickness make it clear that this is a transportable desktop replacement rather than a machine for frequent carrying.
