Garmin Approach S72 puts swing mechanics and green reading on the golfer’s wrist

Garmin’s new flagship golf smartwatch combines on-wrist swing analysis, green contours and course mapping with health tracking, calls and voice controls.

Garmin has added a new flagship model to its golf watch line-up with the Approach S72, a premium smartwatch aimed at players who want course data, fitness tracking and general smartwatch functions in one device. The company says the watch is intended to help golfers understand not just what happened during a round, but also how their physical response may have influenced it. The launch comes as golf wearables increasingly try to combine shot analysis with the broader health features expected of an everyday watch.

The Approach S72 is offered in 43mm and 47mm case sizes, both with bright AMOLED screens, a titanium bezel, a sapphire lens and Garmin’s new ComfortFit fabric strap. Garmin says the watch is built for long wear on and off the course, and the larger model is rated for up to 20 hours of golf use or up to 16 days with GPS disabled. Third-party launch reports also said the smaller version weighs 41 grams and carries a 1.3-inch display, underscoring Garmin’s push to keep the device relatively light for a golf watch with extensive sensors and mapping tools.

A key addition is on-wrist swing analysis. Garmin says the watch can measure hand speed, backswing length and wrist rotation, giving golfers a more objective view of their mechanics during practice and play. The device also tracks biometric data, including real-time heart rate, so users can review how their physical state changed before and after shots. That gives the S72 a more analytical profile than a conventional golf GPS watch, with the data aimed at helping players spot patterns rather than relying purely on feel.

Putting receives a separate layer of analysis through Garmin’s green contour system. With an active Garmin Golf Membership, the watch can show the expected direction of break and the average slope percentage, which Garmin says helps golfers choose a better aim point. The company has also added aerial imagery of holes, allowing players to visualise lay-up options, safer miss zones and approach strategy before they hit. Independent launch coverage said the watch also includes access to maps for more than 43,000 courses, broadening its appeal to frequent travellers and tournament players.

Garmin is also positioning the S72 as a daily smartwatch rather than a device confined to the fairway. It includes a built-in speaker and microphone for calls and voice commands, plus a flashlight with variable white light and a red-light mode for finding equipment in low light. Away from golf, the watch offers wrist-based heart rate tracking, stress measurement, Body Battery energy monitoring, sleep analysis and multiple activity profiles for training and recovery. Garmin notes that these wellness functions are not medical tools and should not be used to diagnose or monitor health conditions.

Garmin says the Approach S72 will go on sale on 22 October 2026 at PHP52,990. The watch will be available through Garmin’s website, brand stores, speciality retailers and official e-commerce channels. Pricing reported elsewhere also placed the device at $799.99 in international markets, reflecting its positioning as a high-end golf wearable rather than an entry-level GPS watch.
