Google’s latest Pixel Watch 5 introduces advanced AI-driven health and safety tools, including emergency monitoring and expanded fitness features, despite retaining a familiar design in a bid to make the smartwatch more proactive.
Google has used the Pixel Watch 5 to push its smartwatch further into AI-assisted health and safety, even if the design will look familiar to anyone who has seen the last model. The device arrives alongside the company’s new phones and keeps the same rounded profile, but the bigger change is under the surface: more Gemini integration, expanded fitness tools and new emergency-monitoring features aimed at making the watch more proactive rather than merely reactive.
According to HardwareZone, the watch face can now surface context-sensitive information through At a Glance, such as a boarding pass at the airport or commute updates, while Raise to Talk has been improved so users can trigger Gemini commands more quickly from the wrist. Google says these common tasks are handled with less delay and can even work offline. Android Central reports that the watch also adds AI-generated watch faces and broader Gemini support, although some reviewers argue the hardware itself has changed only marginally.
The fitness and health offering has been broadened as well. HardwareZone says the Pixel Watch 5 introduces guided strength-training sessions that can record weights and repetitions, while Google Health Coach can build routines around a user’s goals and recovery data such as sleep and heart-rate variability. Android Central and Tom’s Guide both say Google is also adding more ambitious monitoring features, including blood-pressure trends, insulin-resistance trends and a breathing-emergency system that can contact emergency services and share location if the wearer does not respond. Google says some of these tools are limited by region or require a separate premium subscription.
On the hardware side, Google is sticking with 41 mm and 45 mm models, an Actua 360 display that reaches 3,000 nits and battery ratings of up to 30 hours and 40 hours respectively, according to HardwareZone and Google’s product information. The company also says the watch uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor and dual-frequency GPS for better location accuracy. HardwareZone reports pricing from S$569 for the 41 mm model and S$599 for the 45 mm version, with pre-orders open and sales due to begin on August 20 in selected stores and online channels.
