Google teases Pixel Watch 5 with a focus on traditional design and health features

Google builds anticipation for the Pixel Watch 5 with a playful teaser emphasising its classic watch look and advanced health monitoring, ahead of its August 12 launch.

Google has begun building anticipation for the Pixel Watch 5 with a teaser that leans on a familiar theme: design. In a short video posted to YouTube ahead of the August 12 launch event, the company appears to take a playful swipe at Samsung Galaxy Watches and Apple Watches by suggesting that some rivals have drifted too far from the look of a traditional timepiece. Google’s message is simple: the Pixel Watch 5 still “has the decency to look like a watch.”

That positioning fits the Pixel line’s established aesthetic. Leaked marketing images reported by T3 suggest the new model will closely resemble its predecessor, with Google continuing the rounded, minimalist style that has defined the series so far. The same images point to a stronger emphasis on software intelligence, including Gemini-powered features, smart alarms that aim to wake users at more suitable points in the sleep cycle and an AI Coach that analyses usage patterns.

Health tracking is also expected to remain central. According to the leaked materials, Google is preparing blood oxygen monitoring, atrial fibrillation detection, sleep tracking and heart rate variability measurements. Tom’s Guide reported that the watch is likely to appear at the company’s Made by Google event on August 12 alongside the Pixel 11 range, with expectations of modest internal upgrades, including more RAM and storage, plus a possible emergency dialling function.

Even so, the design-led pitch leaves one obvious question unanswered: battery life. Previous comparisons between Google’s watch and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch line have highlighted the latter’s longer runtime and tougher materials, with Samsung’s models often favouring utility over style. Google has not addressed endurance in its latest teaser, which suggests the company is choosing to lead with looks and integrated health features rather than practical trade-offs.
