Google teases the Pixel Watch 5, highlighting a classic watch aesthetic as it expands AI features, aiming to stand out against Apple and Samsung with a familiar, refined style.
Google’s first teaser for the Pixel Watch 5 leans heavily on one message: the company wants its smartwatch to look and feel like a traditional timepiece, even as it handles health, fitness and sleep tracking. That positioning suggests Google is trying to draw a clear contrast with Apple and Samsung, whose watches have defined a more distinctly tech-led design language in the category, according to Notebookcheck’s report on the teaser.
The emphasis on familiar watch styling is notable because the Pixel Watch line has long favoured a rounded, minimalist form. Comparisons with Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 underline that both brands use circular displays, but with different approaches to case materials, screen protection and overall profile. Reviews from TechRadar, Android Central and Digital Trends have described the Pixel Watch as a domed, stainless-steel device with a 41mm footprint, while the Galaxy Watch 5 comes in 40mm and 44mm versions and is generally slimmer and lighter. Those differences help explain why Google appears to be foregrounding design as a selling point rather than trying to win on hardware bulk or size.
Google is also expected to push AI features more aggressively on the new watch. Notebookcheck says the company is promoting “Gemini Intelligence” and that earlier leaks point to increases in battery capacity, RAM and storage, even though the watch is not expected to use Qualcomm’s newer Snapdragon Wear Elite platform. Google’s own support material already describes Gemini on the Pixel Watch as a hands-free assistant for everyday tasks, while also noting that availability depends on the connected phone, language and region. That suggests the Pixel Watch 5 may be less about a dramatic redesign than about refining the software layer that sits on top of the familiar form.
