OM System has reintroduced the PEN name with a lightweight, stylish mirrorless camera blending classic aesthetics with advanced features, aimed at enthusiasts seeking portability and versatility.
OM System has revived the PEN name with a compact mirrorless camera that blends retro styling with features usually reserved for more expensive bodies. The new model continues the digital PEN line first introduced under Olympus in 2009, but OM System is positioning it as a more capable all-rounder within its wider Micro Four Thirds range, bridging the gap between entry-level buyers and the long-discontinued PEN-F.
According to the company’s specification sheet and reports from TechRadar, the camera uses a 20.37MP Micro Four Thirds sensor, five-axis in-body image stabilisation and a 121-point phase-detection autofocus system with subject detection for people and animals. It also adds a corner-mounted electronic viewfinder in a rangefinder-style body, a 3.0-inch articulated touchscreen and weather sealing rated to IPX1, with the finished package weighing less than 400g with battery and card fitted.
OM System has also packed in much of the brand’s computational photography software. The PEN includes High Res Shot, Live ND, Focus Stacking, HDR, Multiple Exposure, Starry Sky AF and Pro Capture shooting at up to 30fps, depending on mode. It also offers colour and monochrome profile controls aimed at photographers who want stronger in-camera rendering and less post-processing, while 4K video, remote control functions and smartphone tethering extend its appeal beyond stills.
Digital Camera World reported that the camera shares core technology with the OM-5 Mark II, including the TruePic IX processor, and that OM System is targeting beginners and enthusiasts who want a small everyday camera rather than a traditional flagship. The publication also noted a 410-shot battery, USB-C charging and a design that keeps the controls simple while still offering a dedicated creative dial. In hands-on testing, the same outlet said the PEN’s portability and stabilisation make it well suited to street, travel and spontaneous photography.
To support the weather-sealed body, OM System has refreshed its inexpensive 14-42mm kit zoom. The M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 III now carries IPX1 protection, a collapsing mechanism with click release and support for focus stacking. OM System says the camera will go on sale in late September or early October, priced at £849.99 body only or £949.99 with the new kit lens, while the lens alone will sell for £349.99.
