The Oppo Find X9 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra compete fiercely in the premium smartphone market, each bringing distinct advantages and design philosophies, but Samsung retains an edge in all-round appeal according to recent reviews.
Oppo’s Find X9 Ultra has returned to the flagship conversation with a force that is hard to ignore, but Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra still looks like the more rounded choice for most buyers. Frandroid said the Oppo is the pricier device in France, starting at €1,699, compared with €1,469 for the Samsung, yet both phones earned top marks in testing. That makes this less a contest between a clear winner and loser than a comparison between two very different ideas of what an ultra-premium smartphone should be.
On design, the Oppo is the more extravagant handset. Frandroid described it as thick, heavy and dominated by an oversized rear camera module, while the Samsung looks more restrained with a flatter back and slimmer profile. Both phones are built to a high standard, but Oppo edges ahead on protection with an IP69 rating, compared with Samsung’s IP68. The Chinese model also adds two programmable buttons, one for shortcuts and one aimed at camera control, which makes it more feature-packed but also more complex.
Samsung’s screen has one notable advantage: Privacy Display, a software feature that reduces side viewing so messages and other content are harder to read from an angle. On pure display quality, though, the two devices split the difference. Frandroid found the Oppo panel more colour-accurate, while the Samsung reaches much higher brightness, making it easier to read outdoors. Tom’s Guide similarly highlighted the S26 Ultra’s display as a major strength in Samsung’s 2026 line-up.
Both phones run Android 16, with Oppo’s ColorOS and Samsung’s One UI delivering deep customisation and polished animations. Their AI toolsets are also broadly competitive, although Samsung’s Galaxy AI remains more mature and has been expanded over several generations. Tom’s Guide described the S26 Ultra as Samsung’s best overall phone, while Frandroid noted Oppo’s own AI additions, including a Mind Space-style hub for organising screenshots and memos. The big practical difference is support: Samsung promises seven years of updates, while Oppo offers five.
Performance is close enough that most users will struggle to tell the difference in daily use. Both rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, although Samsung’s custom-tuned version gives it a slight edge in benchmarks. Frandroid said that advantage narrows in real-world use because the S26 Ultra can heat up under load, whereas the Oppo appears more stable. Camera is where Oppo pushes hardest, with a 200-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 200-megapixel 3x telephoto and a 50-megapixel 10x telephoto. Samsung counters with a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide, a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto and a 50-megapixel 5x lens. Tom’s Guide’s testing found Samsung stronger for long-range zoom, portraits and low light in some scenarios, but Frandroid gave Oppo the edge overall, especially for its more ambitious telephoto system and cleaner detail at distance.
Battery life is another area where Oppo looks impressive on paper and in testing. Its 7,050mAh battery is far larger than Samsung’s 5,000mAh unit, and Frandroid said it lasted almost four hours longer in laboratory testing. Even so, both phones support rapid charging at roughly the same pace, with a full refill taking about 45 minutes. Samsung does have one modern convenience Oppo lacks: Qi 2 wireless charging support. In the end, Frandroid’s verdict was that the Galaxy S26 Ultra remains the better all-round pick because of its sleeker design, brighter display and longer software support, even if the Find X9 Ultra is the more extreme camera and battery machine.
