Google’s Pixel Watch 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9 are the latest high-end rivals, with differences in price, design, health features, and ecosystem alignment offering distinct choices for Android users this year.
Google and Samsung have each refreshed their top-end Android smartwatches within weeks of one another, and early signs suggest both the Pixel Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 9 could rank among the best options for Android users this year. Tom’s Guide says the two models are closely matched on paper, but several practical differences set them apart, from price and case shape to health software and the way each company packages its fitness tools.
The clearest divide is cost. Samsung has pushed the starting price of the Galaxy Watch 9 up to $379, while Google has lifted the Pixel Watch 5 to $399. That makes Samsung’s watch the cheaper buy, although the gap is narrow enough that buyers may care more about ecosystem fit and feature set than the outright saving. Android Central also notes that Google has increased storage to 64GB, while Samsung remains on 32GB, which may matter for users who load offline music or apps onto the watch.
Design is another obvious split. The Pixel Watch 5 keeps Google’s fully round, domed look, with 41mm and 45mm versions, whereas Samsung’s watch uses a flatter, cushion-style case in 40mm and 44mm sizes. Tom’s Guide says both feel well made and both carry 50-metre water resistance, but the screens differ in personality: Google’s display curves gently at the edges, while Samsung’s is flat and ringed by a thicker bezel. In both cases, peak brightness reaches 3,000 nits, which should keep either watch readable outdoors.
The health and safety split is more striking. According to Tom’s Guide, both devices include staples such as fall detection and emergency SOS, but the Galaxy Watch 9 adds FDA-cleared sleep apnoea detection. The Pixel Watch 5, by contrast, brings Loss of Pulse Detection and a new Breathing Emergency Detection function. Android Central says Google is also leaning more heavily into AI-led health coaching through its paid Google Health Premium plan, whereas Samsung’s equivalent training features are bundled free, but only for users with a Samsung phone.
Software direction may ultimately decide the better fit. Android Central reports that the Pixel Watch 5 runs Wear OS 7 on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform, with deeper Gemini integration and several new health tools, including blood pressure trends and insulin resistance monitoring. TechRadar says the watch also adds emergency satellite messaging in some markets and is unusually repairable for a modern smartwatch. Samsung, meanwhile, is positioning the Galaxy Watch 9 as the sturdier, more ecosystem-tied option, with more rugged construction and stronger appeal for existing Galaxy phone owners. For buyers choosing between them, the result is less about raw specifications than which brand’s services, design language and health platform they are more likely to use every day.
