The $169.99 Polaroid Mod uses a physical mode dial and four in-camera effects to offer a deliberately hands-on alternative to software-led smartphone photography.
Polaroid’s new Mod instant camera is a deliberate push back towards hands-on, chemically based photography at a time when most consumer imaging is controlled by software. The company says the camera is built around four in-camera creative modes: Split Shot, Double Exposure, Motion Freeze and Light Painting. These are selected with a physical mode dial rather than an app, keeping the shooting process entirely analogue in feel.
The Mod has begun appearing in US retail, with wider international availability expected later. According to Polaroid’s own announcement and product listing, the camera costs $169.99 and is sold with support for i-Type and 600 film. The design pairs a two-lens autofocus system with a Brightness Dial for exposure adjustment, while TechRadar’s hands-on account noted that the camera automatically switches between a close-up lens and a distance lens depending on the scene.
In practical terms, the Mod is aimed at people who want creative control without manual exposure complexity. The camera offers built-in flash support and a set of preset modes that shape the final image in-camera. Polaroid says the concept is meant to reward the process of shooting as much as the finished print, and the company is pitching the device as a fully analogue product rather than a hybrid gadget.
Early testing suggests that the camera delivers exactly the kind of unpredictable output that instant-film users expect. Writing for TechRadar, Lance Ulanoff said the results could look grainy or high-contrast, even in good light, but that this was part of the appeal rather than a flaw. He also found the creative modes easy to use, particularly Double Exposure, Split Shot, Motion Freeze and Light Painting, although he noted that the images often leaned towards an artful, experimental look rather than smartphone-style clarity.
