Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra2 targets active users with a refined design, robust outdoor capabilities, and longer battery life, promising a versatile device for both fitness enthusiasts and adventurers.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is aimed at users who want one device to handle weekday wear, training and harsher outdoor use. The watch combines a 47mm titanium case with diving and trail-running functions, while also trying to solve a familiar problem in premium wearables: how to increase endurance without making the device even bulkier. Samsung says the new model carries a larger battery in a thinner body, and independent reviews broadly agree that the revised design is more refined than before.
The screen is one of its strongest assets. Samsung claims peak brightness of 5,000 nits, and reviewers say the display remains legible in strong sunlight, where smaller text can still be read quickly. That matters because a sports watch loses practical value if it becomes hard to check outdoors. Samsung has also added Trail Run guidance with elevation and terrain data, plus hydration prompts under Nutrition Alert, which are intended to help runners manage effort over demanding routes.
The watch is not limited to land-based exercise. Samsung says it can record depth, dive time and water temperature once automatic dive detection is switched on, while a separate app developed with Mares is meant to add more advanced recreational diving functions. The company frames the underwater tools as suitable for dives to 40 metres through the app, with some extra capabilities tied to subscription. For day-to-day health monitoring, the Ultra2 also offers sleep-based tracking, including Vitals, a sleep apnoea screening feature, a Heart Health Score, Daily Cardio Load and a Fitness Index.
Performance appears to be another clear improvement. Samsung’s Snapdragon Wear Elite processor makes the interface feel more responsive, particularly when opening apps or moving between tasks. Battery life is reported at around three days in ordinary use, with Samsung quoting up to 60 hours when the always-on display is enabled and as much as 80 hours with it switched off. Reviewers note, however, that real-world endurance can still fall short of some rivals, even if charging is faster and the battery is larger.
The Ultra2 remains a substantial watch, and the 47mm size will still be too much for some wrists despite the slimmer case and lighter Marine Band. Samsung also offers a Trail Band for those who prefer a more breathable strap. In South Africa, the recommended retail price is R14,999, with Titanium Silver and Titanium Gray finishes available.
