Samsung unveils its first Ultra foldable in Japan with AI-powered multitasking features

Samsung Electronics Japan launches the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the company’s first Ultra model, emphasising AI-driven productivity and advanced foldable technology, with sales starting immediately through multiple retail channels.

Samsung Electronics Japan said on August 7 that it is releasing SIM-free versions of its latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, with sales beginning the same day through Amazon Japan, electronics retailers, Samsung’s official stores on Rakuten Market and Yahoo! Shopping, and IIJmio. The launch extends the Galaxy Z line in Japan with three models aimed at different uses, from productivity to media viewing and personal style.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the headline device in the range and, according to Samsung’s own materials, is the first Ultra model in the Galaxy Z series. It pairs an 8-inch main display with a thinner body than any previous Galaxy Z Fold model, measuring about 4.1mm when unfolded and weighing roughly 215g. Samsung says the design refinements to the hinge, tension and edge structure make the device easier to open, while its Flex Titanium display technology is intended to reduce the visibility of the crease and improve durability. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and includes a 5,000mAh battery.

Samsung positions the Fold8 Ultra as a device built around AI-assisted multitasking. The company says users can upload meeting notes, voice recordings or PDF files into Gemini Notebook to generate summaries and convert material into videos, presentations, podcasts or quizzes. It also highlights a feature called Now Nudge, which predicts user behaviour and suggests actions such as adding dinner plans from a messaging app directly to the calendar. Samsung’s wider launch materials describe the Fold8 Ultra as designed for high-end productivity and immersive foldable use.

The standard Galaxy Z Fold8 takes a different approach, with Samsung reshaping the display ratios for varied content. The company says the inner screen uses a 4:3 layout for films and games, while the outer display is tuned for short-form video and everyday browsing. It is also the lightest Galaxy Z Fold model so far at about 201g and carries a 4,800mAh battery rated for more than 26 hours of video playback. Samsung adds a new AI camera tool, My Fan Cam, which automatically reframes footage around a chosen subject, and an AI agent function that can search for hotel options in the background after a Gemini request.

The Galaxy Z Flip8, meanwhile, is focused on portability and quick access from the cover screen. Samsung says the device is about 6.1mm thick when open and weighs roughly 180g, with stronger materials used to reinforce the frame and hinge. Its updated outer display now surfaces weather, schedules, alerts and personalised financial information through Now Brief, while the camera system adds steadier one-handed shooting, horizon locking and dual recording that shows both the subject and the shooter at once. Samsung says the three phones are meant to offer distinct foldable experiences: ultra-level productivity, broader media immersion and compact self-expression.
