Leaked details suggest Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra could overhaul its camera system, removing traditional zoom options in favour of higher-resolution sensors, signalling a potential shift in flagship photography strategy.
Samsung’s next flagship phones are shaping up to be a study in compromise as well as refinement, according to a wave of leaks this week. Reports cited by several technology sites suggest the Galaxy S27 Pro could arrive with a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide and a 12-megapixel 3x telephoto lens, while the Ultra may drop one of its long-standing zoom cameras and move to a three-sensor rear array. Tom’s Guide and T3 both said the rumoured changes would mark a notable shift for a line that has traditionally leaned on multiple telephoto options.
The most significant claim concerns the Galaxy S27 Ultra. According to reports from Tom’s Guide, T3 and SamMobile, Samsung could remove the 3x telephoto camera entirely and rely instead on a 200-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultrawide and a 50-megapixel 5x telephoto unit. That would leave users depending more heavily on in-sensor crop zoom for mid-range magnification. Gizmochina separately reported that the Pro and Ultra may share a Sony IMX855 ultrawide sensor and that the Ultra could keep a variable-aperture 200-megapixel main camera, although those claims remain unconfirmed.
The broader Samsung camera picture is less settled than some of the early leaks suggest. Tom’s Guide noted that the current Galaxy S26 Ultra still leads Samsung’s own line for still photography thanks to its dual telephoto hardware and strong low-light performance, which makes any cut to zoom flexibility on the next Ultra model especially notable. At the same time, Gadget-related reporting has pointed to a more aggressive battery strategy for the S27 Ultra, including a possible silicon-carbon pack around 5,700mAh, which would fit a redesign aimed at slimming the camera bump and making room for a larger cell.
Elsewhere in the same technology roundup, Xiaomi showed off the Redmi K100 Pro and K100 Pro Max before their August 11 launch, with the Pro model set to get a 6.59-inch 185Hz display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series chip, while the Pro Max adds a 6.9-inch OLED panel, a 9,000mAh battery and a triple 50-megapixel rear camera. Google also had fresh Pixel 11 Pro XL renders circulating online ahead of an August 12 unveiling, alongside leaked promo material pointing to Tensor G6, up to 120x AI-assisted digital zoom and a new “Pixel Glow” notification light.
