Sony FX5 upgrade introduces open gate capture and higher dynamic range for professional filmmakers

Sony’s FX5 cinema camera advances its professional video capabilities with full-frame sensor innovations, open gate recording, and enhanced low-light performance, setting a new standard for high-end filmmaking workflows.

Sony’s FX5 is positioned as a significant step up for the Cinema Line, combining a full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with the BIONZ XR2 processor and an integrated AI unit. In practical terms, that means faster readout, improved subject recognition and stronger image processing across demanding video work. According to Sony’s specifications, the camera is built to handle 5K recording at up to 60 frames per second, 4K at up to 120 frames per second and Full HD at up to 240 frames per second.

The headline feature for many users is Open Gate capture, which uses the full 3:2 sensor area rather than cropping to a standard video frame. Sony says this gives editors more flexibility in post-production, particularly for reframing and delivery in different aspect ratios. The camera also supports internal 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN recording, Sony’s RAW format, which reduces reliance on an external recorder for high-end workflows.

Low-light performance is another focus. Sony lists three base ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12800, together with Dual Gain Shooting, a system intended to improve noise control while preserving shadow detail. The company says the camera delivers 15+ stops of dynamic range when shooting in S-Log3, which should help maintain highlight and shadow information in high-contrast scenes.

Sony has also added practical refinements aimed at professional monitoring and handling. The FX5 features a 3.5-inch LCD screen with four-axis tilt support, alongside advanced monitoring tools. For productions balancing portability with higher-end image requirements, the camera appears designed to bridge the gap between compact run-and-gun shooting and more formal cinema workflows.
