Sony’s new two-transmitter wireless microphone system launches in Malaysia at RM1,499, combining long-range connectivity, onboard backup recording and direct 32-bit float audio capture.
Sony has launched the ECM-W5 wireless microphone system in Malaysia, positioning it as a compact audio tool for creators who need more stable capture in demanding shooting environments. The kit pairs two transmitters with a single receiver and is designed for line-of-sight transmission over distances of up to 500 metres, a specification Sony says is intended to reduce drop-outs in crowded radio-frequency conditions. According to Sony’s product information, the system is aimed at video work that ranges from interviews to event coverage and panel discussions, where multiple voices must be captured cleanly and quickly.
A key part of the system is Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe, which allows compatible cameras to receive 32-bit float audio digitally. In practical terms, that means sound can be passed directly into the camera in a single file, without the need for an external recorder or separate audio track to sync later. Sony says the approach is meant to simplify post-production while lowering the risk of clipping, particularly when recording both quiet speech and sudden loud sounds.
The ECM-W5 also includes up to 64GB of built-in storage on the transmitter for backup recordings. Sony says that capacity is sufficient for up to 90 hours of 32-bit float audio at 48 kHz, or up to 60 hours at 24-bit/96 kHz. The company adds that the system supports up to four channels of in-camera audio, giving users more flexibility for multi-source recording. That broader capability may be useful in situations such as interviews with multiple participants, live demonstrations or small-scale production work.
In Malaysia, Sony is pricing the ECM-W5 at RM1,499, with availability set for early December through authorised resellers and Sony stores. Customers who place a pre-order before 29 November will receive a Creator Essential Kit, which Sony says includes a PGYTECH Tech Organiser Mini V2 and a SmallRig Foldable Multi-tools Kit. The announcement underscores Sony’s continued push to package wireless audio, camera integration and onboard recording into a single workflow for creators who want less equipment and fewer post-production steps.
