Close-up focus challenge sees DJI’s Osmo Action 6 rival GoPro’s high-end Mission 1 Pro

In a detailed side-by-side test, DJI’s Osmo Action 6 outperforms GoPro’s Mission 1 Pro in close-range filming, challenging assumptions about premium specifications and spotlighting practical usability for real-world action

The comparison between GoPro’s Mission 1 Pro and DJI’s Osmo Action 6 is less about raw specification and more about how each camera behaves in the field. According to Connor McCaskill’s side-by-side test, the GoPro offers the larger 1-inch, 50-megapixel sensor, 8K open-gate recording and faster slow-motion options, while the DJI counters with a lower price, internal storage and a lens that can focus far closer to the subject. That difference matters because action cameras are usually used at very short distances, not from across a room.

On paper, the GoPro looks like the more ambitious device. McCaskill’s comparison puts it ahead for sensor size, maximum bitrate and extreme slow motion, including genuine internal 960fps capture at 1080p in short bursts. Tom’s Guide and Digital Camera World both describe the Mission 1 Pro as the premium model in GoPro’s line-up, with 8K capture and a feature set aimed at serious users. Photography Talk also notes that its higher-end imaging hardware gives it the stronger technical headline.

Yet DJI’s Action 6 makes a more practical case for many users. Tom’s Guide says the camera combines 8K recording with strong stabilisation, internal audio features, interchangeable lenses and wireless connection to DJI microphones. DroneXL likewise points to the Action 6’s variable aperture, built-in storage and lower launch price as meaningful advantages. In McCaskill’s own test, the DJI’s minimum focusing distance of roughly 7.5 to 8 inches proved decisive, especially for close-up work on helmets, chest mounts and tools held near the lens.

That focusing behaviour is the key reason the more expensive camera does not automatically win. McCaskill argues that large sensors and larger lenses can become a disadvantage when the subject is close, because sharpness matters more than headline resolution in real-world action shooting. He notes that this is especially relevant for mechanics, builders and cyclists, all of whom often film within arm’s reach of the camera. In that context, the cheaper DJI is not merely a budget alternative; it may be the better tool.

There are still areas where the GoPro is ahead. McCaskill found its low-light performance slightly stronger, and its GP-Log 2 profile marginally ahead on dynamic range. The camera also has the edge in true slow motion and 32-bit float audio recording, although that latter benefit requires opening the camera’s port, which reduces the sealed simplicity that action-camera buyers usually want. Battery life, stabilisation and general image quality were close enough that neither camera clearly dominated.

The result is a more nuanced verdict than the spec sheet suggests. According to the comparison, the GoPro Mission 1 Pro is the more technically capable camera, but not necessarily the more sensible purchase. For distant subjects, drones or mounted shots where focus is not an issue, its higher-end imaging pipeline makes a strong case. For everyday close-range action, the DJI Osmo Action 6 may be the more useful choice.
