TechSpot’s latest review shows AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT leading Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 in most gaming scenarios, with advantages in performance and cost efficiency at high resolutions.
TechSpot’s latest comparison of AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5070 suggests that the two cards may target the same market, but they do not deliver the same result in practice. Across a broad run of modern games, the Radeon model came out ahead on average, while also offering a better cost per frame for buyers focused on standard gaming performance.
According to TechSpot, the test used 57 games at 1,440p and 4K, with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory and Windows 11 as the platform. The Radeon RX 9070 XT averaged a 24% lead at 1,440p and a 25% advantage at 4K. TechSpot also found that AMD’s card delivered stronger 1% low results, which matter because they reflect frame-time stability and the smoothness of play.
The gap was often wider in individual titles. In 007 First Light, the Radeon card was ahead by as much as 46%, while Final Fantasy XVI showed a lead of up to 57%. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty also favoured AMD by as much as 50% in conventional rendering. In one of the harsher ray-traced tests, 4K ultra settings pushed the RTX 5070 much harder, with the RX 9070 XT performing at roughly twice the speed.
Nvidia did retain some clear wins. TechSpot reported that the RTX 5070 moved ahead in Doom: The Dark Ages with full path tracing, and it also led in Counter-Strike 2 at 4K very high settings and in Fortnite’s Performance Mode. Overwatch was effectively level, with both cards returning 137 frames per second at 4K Epic. These results underline that workload and settings still matter, especially once ray tracing or competitive performance modes enter the picture.
Memory capacity is another point in AMD’s favour. The RX 9070 XT ships with 16GB of VRAM, compared with 12GB on the RTX 5070, and that difference is already beginning to affect newer titles at higher resolutions and maximum settings. TechSpot said the AMD card was also cheaper at the time of testing, leaving the RTX 5070 around 9% more expensive but roughly 37% worse on cost per frame at 1,440p and 39% worse at 4K. Nvidia still has the stronger software ecosystem, including its scaling and frame-generation tools, but on raw gaming output and value, the Radeon RX 9070 XT appears to be the more compelling purchase.
