Initial reports from early adopters of the iPhone 18 Pro highlight significant issues with display touch input and Face ID reliability, raising questions about the device’s software stability and hardware design.
Some early buyers of Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro line are reporting two separate faults that are raising concern about software stability on the new models. One complaint involves the display apparently ignoring touch input, while another centres on Face ID failures that can leave the handset frozen before it restarts itself. According to Macworld, the reports surfaced within days of the first handsets reaching customers.
In one case, a user on X posted video that appeared to show swipes having no effect on the screen. The poster said the fault had happened more than once and denied triggering it deliberately. Macworld also noted a similar report on Reddit, although that account mentioned a screen protector, which may point to a different cause. The exact scope of the touch issue remains unclear, and it has not been confirmed whether it is tied to iOS 27 or the new hardware.
The second problem appears more serious. MacRumors reported that some iPhone 18 Pro users are seeing Face ID fail during app authentication, followed by device freezes and automatic reboots. 9to5Mac likewise said the crash seems to occur after a failed Face ID attempt, especially when unlocking protected apps. Some users have also reported “Face ID is Not Available” during setup, along with inconsistent behaviour in the “Require Attention for Face ID” setting.
The reports suggest the issue affects both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but not every device. Apple has not publicly commented, and it remains uncertain whether the problem stems from software or from the redesigned Face ID hardware, including the under-display infrared camera. For now, the pattern points to an early reliability problem that may be resolved by a software update, though that has not been confirmed.
