The GMKtec EVO-X3, a compact system built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395, demonstrates impressive gaming capabilities through SteamOS, while primarily targeting AI workloads, pushing the boundaries of mini-PC performance.
GMKtec’s EVO-X3 is positioning itself as more than a compact workstation. Built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395, the mini-PC is aimed at local AI processing, but recent testing suggests it is also a capable gaming machine when paired with SteamOS. According to Notebookcheck, that Linux-based setup helped the system make strong use of its Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, with the machine showing low temperatures alongside high frame rates.
The hardware explains much of that performance. GMKtec says the EVO-X3 can be configured with up to 128GB of LPDDR5X memory, dual PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD slots and OCuLink support for external graphics expansion. The company also markets the system as suitable for demanding AI workloads, while third-party coverage has highlighted its 16-core, 32-thread processor, 50 TOPS neural engine and a total AI compute figure of 126 TOPS.
In ETA Prime’s SteamOS testing, the EVO-X3 handled several demanding games at 1440p with high settings surprisingly well. Notebookcheck reported that Cyberpunk 2077 reached nearly 80 frames per second with FSR set to Quality, while Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered exceeded 80 fps under similar conditions. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also averaged more than 85 fps at 1440p with Very High settings and FSR Quality. The results underline how much performance AMD’s Strix Halo platform can deliver when the software environment is tuned for gaming rather than general desktop use.
That performance comes at a steep cost. Notebookcheck said the reviewed configuration of the EVO-X3 AI carries a price tag of €5,199.96, which places it far beyond what most buyers would spend on a gaming-only system. GMKtec and other launch reports suggest the machine is meant first and foremost for AI and professional workloads, with gaming as a secondary strength rather than its main value proposition.
