Samsung’s overlooked Galaxy Tab S12 Plus may be the flagship tablet to buy

With the Ultra’s core performance, display technology and S Pen support in a more manageable design, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12 Plus makes a compelling case as the line-up’s most practical premium tablet.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12 Plus may sit in the shadow of the Ultra in the company’s marketing, but in everyday use it is easier to see why the smaller model can be the better choice. Tom’s Guide says the 12.6-inch version has become the reviewer’s preferred Samsung tablet because it keeps the flagship hardware and software experience while remaining more manageable to carry and use away from a desk. That judgement is reinforced by broader launch coverage, which shows the Plus and Ultra sharing the same Dimensity 9500 platform, S Pen support and 120Hz AMOLED family of displays, with the main differences concentrated in size and a handful of features.

The appeal begins with the screen. A 12.6-inch panel is large enough for films, comics and multitasking, yet still slim and light enough to fit into a bag without becoming awkward. Tom’s Guide argues that this is the point where Samsung’s tablet stops feeling like an oversized gadget and starts feeling genuinely practical for commuting, reading and casual work. Digital Trends likewise highlights the Tab S12 Plus as a portable device designed for work, study and entertainment, with a Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen, 120Hz refresh rate and Vision Booster brightness management.

That balance matters because display quality is the main reason to buy a premium tablet in this class. Tom’s Guide says the AMOLED panel delivers strong contrast, rich colour and smooth scrolling, while the experience remains comfortable enough for long sessions of video and comic reading. The publication also notes that Samsung’s quoted brightness figures match the larger Ultra, which it previously praised as one of the best tablet screens it had tested. Other launch reporting says the Plus model is rated at up to 1,600 nits peak brightness, which should help with outdoor use even if reflections remain a concern on glossy glass.

For creative work, the S Pen support and split-screen tools make the tablet feel more versatile than a simple media slate. Tom’s Guide says the reviewer found themselves using the stylus more often once the tablet became part of a reading routine, with comic panels on one side of the screen and sketching or note-taking on the other. That fits Samsung’s wider pitch for the device as a productivity machine rather than just a consumption screen. The hardware is also presented as a serious work platform, with coverage of the launch noting support for the S Pen and a design aimed at portability without sacrificing functionality.

The optional keyboard case strengthens that argument, even if it pushes the total price into laptop territory. Tom’s Guide describes Samsung’s Pro Keyboard as expensive but well built, with a sturdy aluminium frame, a responsive trackpad, backlighting and a DeX button that quickly turns the tablet into a desktop-style workstation. The trade-offs are real: the Plus model has a single rear camera rather than the Ultra’s dual setup, and it stops at Wi‑Fi 6E rather than Wi‑Fi 7. But those are relatively minor concessions for users who value portability over the absolute largest display. Other reviews also point to expandable storage, 5G options in some markets and Samsung’s long software support promise as practical advantages in the same class.

That is ultimately why the Tab S12 Plus may be the more sensible flagship. It is still expensive, and the keyboard accessory makes the economics even harder to ignore, but the tablet itself appears to land in the sweet spot between power and usability. The Ultra may be the more dramatic product on paper, yet the Plus is the one that better matches how many people actually use a premium tablet: on the sofa, on a train, at a café or occasionally docked for proper work. In that context, Samsung’s smaller flagship looks less like a compromise than the line-up’s most complete device.
