Apple Intelligence turns Home security footage into searchable, summarised events

Apple is bringing natural-language searches and AI-generated summaries to compatible Home security cameras, but the feature requires supported hardware, an Apple Intelligence device and a 2TB iCloud+ plan.

Apple is extending Apple Intelligence into the Home app, adding the ability to search and summarise recordings from compatible security cameras using ordinary language. The change is aimed at making event review less tedious, allowing users to describe what they are looking for rather than manually scanning through clips. According to Apple, the system can also generate written descriptions of recorded camera activity, giving owners a quicker sense of what happened before they open a video.

Apple says the feature is designed to run with strong privacy protections intact. Camera footage and Home app data remain end-to-end encrypted, and Apple says it cannot access that material. Depending on the setup, processing can happen locally on a compatible home hub or through Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s support pages for iPhone, iPad and Mac say the feature requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device, a compatible home hub such as HomePod or Apple TV 4K, and a 2TB iCloud+ plan.

The company is also pairing the software update with new hardware from LG in its Apple Home Collection. That line-up includes indoor, outdoor, floodlight and video doorbell cameras. Apple says eligible iCloud+ subscribers receive 10 days of encrypted event history, while the support material adds that users can enable or disable video summaries and related notification controls from their devices. MacRumors reported earlier this year that Apple was preparing AI-generated descriptions and grouped alerts for the Home app, pointing to a broader effort to make home monitoring more searchable and less dependent on manual clip review.

The practical appeal is straightforward: users can ask for events such as a delivery, a person entering a room or other specific activity, and the app can surface matching footage without requiring them to scrub through timelines. Apple’s support documentation also suggests the feature is not a blanket upgrade for all cameras or accounts, but one tied to hardware, storage tier and device capability. For households already using Apple’s ecosystem, it represents a notable expansion of Apple Intelligence beyond text, images and productivity tools into a more routine, security-focused task.
