Google has officially launched its first Gemini-based smart speaker in Germany, offering enhanced natural speech and smart home integration after a lengthy delay since its initial global rollout.
Google has begun selling its first speaker built specifically for Gemini in Germany, ending a long delay after the device launched in 18 other countries on June 25, including Austria and Switzerland. The Google Home Speaker goes on sale on Tuesday at €120 and is being sold by Google as well as retailers including MediaMarkt and Saturn. For German buyers, the launch closes a gap that had left Google without any smart speaker in its domestic store after it stopped making the Nest Mini and Nest Audio.
The device is designed around Gemini rather than the older Google Assistant, which Google says allows more natural speech, better handling of multi-part requests and a stronger grasp of context in conversation. Google’s support pages say Gemini for Home can be enabled on eligible devices and that everyone in a household can use the features. Some functions, including more advanced voice interactions, require a Google Home Premium subscription.
That subscription costs €10 a month in Germany, and Google is offering six months free to customers who buy the Home Speaker by September 30, 2026. After that, users keep a pared-back version of Gemini for simple tasks, short answers and smart home control. According to Google’s product information, the speaker also serves as a Matter hub and a Thread 1.3 router, extending support for connected household devices. Matter is the cross-brand standard intended to help smart home products work together more easily.
Inside the fabric-covered casing is a 58mm full-range driver designed for 360-degree sound, along with three far-field microphones and a hardware mute switch. Google says the speaker uses a quad-core A55 chip, 1GB of memory and 4GB of flash storage, while connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4. The company also says two speakers can be paired for stereo sound and combined with the Google TV Streamer for a surround setup. Early reviews elsewhere have praised the refreshed design and sound for music, but have also flagged uneven Gemini performance, including occasional delays and unreliable timers.
