Xiaomi unveils affordable Smart Socket 4 to modernise vintage appliances with Wi-Fi 6 connectivity

Xiaomi introduces the Smart Socket 4, a compact, low-cost device that enhances everyday appliances with remote control, automation, and power monitoring, all while supporting advanced Wi-Fi 6 features.

Xiaomi is preparing to bring a low-cost smart plug to the Chinese market that aims to give older appliances a place in its connected-home ecosystem. The Smart Socket 4 is designed to add remote switching, automation and power tracking to ordinary household devices, while keeping the hardware compact enough to avoid crowding adjacent outlets.

According to reports from Xiaomi-focused sites, the socket connects directly to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6, removing the need for a separate hub. Xiaomi has also built in MU-MIMO and OFDMA support, which should help the plug stay responsive in homes with several connected devices. Control is handled through the Mi Home app and Xiaomi’s HyperOS smart-home platform, allowing users to switch appliances on and off remotely and fold the socket into wider automation routines.

The device also includes a high-precision metering chip that records electricity use and presents daily, weekly and monthly consumption data in the app. Users can set power limits between 100W and 2,500W, while timer and countdown functions are processed locally on the plug itself, so they continue to work even if the internet drops. A double press of the physical button can also trigger a countdown before cutting power.

Xiaomi has also trimmed the dimensions to 52 × 41 × 57.6mm, which should make the socket easier to fit on a crowded power strip. The plug uses China’s updated national standard and includes insulated sleeves, together with protection against overheating, surges, excess current and overloads, plus charging safeguards and a child lock. Xiaomi has priced the Smart Socket 4 at 49 yuan, or about $7, in crowdfunding, with some reports saying the retail price will be about $9.
