The latest beta releases of iOS 27 reveal Apple’s preparations for a foldable iPhone and major upgrades to Siri AI, signalling a new era of device innovation and smarter software experiences.
Apple has pushed iOS 27 into another stage of testing, with the latest developer build now at beta 5, alongside updated beta releases for iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate. The software line-up also includes visionOS 27, watchOS 27 and tvOS 27, with Apple saying Siri AI will reach watchOS in a later beta rather than at launch. That fits the broader rollout pattern Apple outlined in June, when it first seeded iOS 27 to developers and signalled that a public beta would follow in July. According to MacRumors and 9to5Mac, the public test build did arrive in July, widening access beyond the developer programme.
The headline change remains Siri AI, which Apple has positioned as a far more capable assistant than the current Siri. It is designed to handle web searches, use personal context and work across apps, while Apple has also been adding a more visible Liquid Glass interface with adjustable transparency and other visual refinements. MacRumors said the public beta also brings broader AI features in apps, plus performance gains aimed at faster launches and more responsive navigation.
Subsequent developer betas have filled in more detail. The June beta 2 build added a “Write with Siri” button in apps such as Notes, Mail and Messages, while Wallet gained an early version of an Insights view for balance, recurring payments and spending. Apple also continued to expand Home app controls, RCS support and accessibility tools, including Live Recognition, which can describe surroundings through the camera and answer questions. Other changes have focused on small but practical refinements, from improved image and Camera app indicators to new animation tweaks and better handling of Siri voice controls.
By beta 3 and beta 4, the emphasis had shifted from broad feature announcements to polish and under-the-hood behaviour. 9to5Mac reported that Siri voice tempo and expressiveness sliders became functional, while Apple also introduced a new Reminders icon, changes to Settings search indexing and additional Liquid Glass animation work. The company has also been testing a more flexible Siri experience inside Safari and YouTube, although behaviour has not been consistent in beta builds. In some cases the assistant can summarise pages directly; in others it refuses, suggesting Apple is still calibrating how much live web content the system should handle.
The most striking clues, however, point beyond Siri and towards Apple’s next hardware. Macworld and 9to5Mac have reported code references in iOS 27 that mention multiple batteries, folding states and multiple screen sizes, all of which strongly suggest Apple is preparing software support for a foldable iPhone. Apple has not confirmed such a device, but the wording in the beta builds is notable because no current iPhone uses a multi-battery setup in that way. For now, the clearest takeaway is that iOS 27 is evolving as both a feature upgrade and a compatibility layer for the company’s next wave of devices.
