Google turns Gmail into a voice-controlled AI briefing for Workspace users

Paid Workspace customers can now use Gmail Live to search their inbox by voice and AI Inbox to surface urgent messages, summaries and key work topics.

Google is extending Gmail Live and AI Inbox to paid Workspace customers, widening access to two Gemini-powered features first shown at Google I/O 2026. The tools are designed to make email less dependent on manual searching and typing, with voice interaction and automated summaries intended to surface the most relevant information more quickly.

According to Android Authority and Google’s own Workspace updates, Gmail Live lets users speak to their inbox and ask the assistant to find details spread across multiple messages and threads. Google has also started adding voice selection controls directly inside the chat interface, giving users a way to change the assistant’s voice without leaving the conversation. The company says the features are available on Android and iPhone, although Android tablets are not supported yet.

Google is also rolling out AI Inbox to Workspace accounts. The feature is meant to behave more like an intelligent briefing than a standard mail list, highlighting important messages, summarising key topics and drawing attention to items that may need urgent action. Google has described the system as a way of connecting broader work context to business-critical email, rather than simply sorting messages by time.

The rollout is limited for now. Google says AI Inbox is available through web and mobile versions of Workspace, but only for English-speaking users in the US at present. For personal Gmail accounts, Android Authority reported that both Gmail Live and AI Inbox still require an active Google AI subscription. Google has also said administrators can turn the features off for organisations that do not want them enabled by default.
