The Document Foundation releases LibreOffice 26.8, reaffirming its commitment to local processing by excluding AI assistants and cloud dependencies, while introducing enhanced document performance, compatibility and new features across its suite.
LibreOffice 26.8 has been released with a clear message from The Document Foundation: the open-source office suite is still not following the industry rush into generative AI. According to CNews, the new version continues the project’s emphasis on local processing, with no AI assistants, no telemetry collection and no requirement for an account or subscription. The suite remains available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
The most significant change in Writer is a new Paragraph Composer developed by TDF. BetaNews and Neowin report that it evaluates several lines together when deciding word spacing, which should produce more even justification across a paragraph. Phoronix also notes that the release is aimed at better performance on large Writer documents, including files with embedded images.
LibreOffice 26.8 also adds Draft View, which strips away page margins and headers so users can focus on text alone. Techaeris reports that Writer and Calc have improved support for right-to-left scripts when text is pasted into documents, while native OpenType variable fonts are now supported. In Impress, slides of different sizes and formats can now sit within the same presentation, and slides can be organised into named sections. Similar mixed-page support has also been added in Draw.
Compatibility with Microsoft Office formats has been improved as well. According to the release notes reflected in CNews and Linux Compatible, Writer and Calc can now import and export certain OOXML documents containing newer chart types, including Pareto charts, without losing objects in conversion, although LibreOffice still cannot edit those charts directly. The release underlines the software’s broader technical stance: richer desktop features, but no dependence on remote services, cloud sign-ins or AI tooling.
