LinkedIn introduces AI slop reporting to combat fake expertise and protect credibility

LinkedIn is rolling out new features to flag and reduce AI-generated posts perceived as low-value, aiming to preserve genuine expertise on the platform amidst rising automated content.

LinkedIn is moving to curb a problem that has become familiar across professional social networks: large volumes of machine-made posts that look polished but add little value. The company has introduced a new reporting option, “Seems like AI slop”, so users can flag posts and comments they believe are heavily generated by artificial intelligence and likely to weaken the quality of discussion on the platform.

Hari Srinivasan, LinkedIn’s chief product officer, said in a post on the network that the company is increasing its ability to let members identify material that appears to be AI slop. He also said LinkedIn is expanding automation defences and is already blocking hundreds of thousands of automated comment attempts a day, along with billions of other automation attempts in recent months.

The change matters because LinkedIn is no longer depending only on hidden moderation systems. It is now asking members to help surface content that may be generic, repetitive or misleadingly authoritative. According to TechRadar, this comes after a 2026 Pangram Labs study found that nearly half of long-form LinkedIn posts were AI-generated. Digital Trends separately reported that LinkedIn accounted for 62% of AI-flagged content in that research, underlining how concentrated the problem has become on a platform built around expertise and professional credibility.

LinkedIn also plans to privately warn users when their posts appear overly dependent on AI-generated writing. At the same time, it is removing its earlier AI writing tool and replacing it with a proofreading feature that corrects errors without rewriting a person’s style. The aim, the company suggests, is to support responsible use of AI while discouraging the kind of automated output that masks weak subject knowledge.

The broader concern is not simply that AI can draft text quickly. It is that it can make shallow commentary look informed. In digital marketing and other knowledge-driven fields, that has helped create a market for recycled analysis, rewritten articles and high-volume posting that imitates expertise without demonstrating it. TechRadar and other outlets have reported similar efforts elsewhere, including Substack’s work with Pangram to identify AI-generated material, while Cloudflare has warned that bot traffic across the internet has already overtaken human-generated requests. If LinkedIn’s approach works, it could become a useful test of whether platforms can preserve genuine expertise in feeds increasingly crowded by automated branding.
