Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of Publisher support from October 2026, prompting users to transition their documents to alternative tools as Microsoft refocuses on more widely used applications within its Office suite.
Microsoft is preparing to retire Publisher from Microsoft 365 on October 1, 2026, and is already warning customers to move their files before support ends. According to Microsoft’s support notice, the desktop publishing app will no longer be included in Microsoft 365 after that date, and existing on-premises suites will also lose support.
Windows Latest reported that Microsoft has begun emailing subscribers to explain the change, saying the company regularly reviews app usage and found that relatively few people still depend on Publisher. Microsoft says the move will let it concentrate resources on products and features used more widely across the Microsoft 365 suite.
The company is also steering users towards Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Designer for many of the tasks Publisher once handled, including labels, envelopes, calendars, cards and templates. Designer adds AI-assisted creation tools that Publisher does not offer. Microsoft recommends converting existing Publisher documents before the deadline, because files left in the app’s native format may no longer open or edit properly once the service is withdrawn.
For some customers, perpetual Office licences will continue to run Publisher after the Microsoft 365 version is removed. Even so, Microsoft has warned that Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support on October 13, 2026, leaving it a poor long-term refuge for hold-outs. That means organisations with archives of Publisher files will need to plan a migration rather than assume they can rely on the software indefinitely.
