Proton’s six-month roadmap will bring Gmail migration to its mobile apps and allow direct Google Drive transfers, while also adding deeper search and account-management tools.
Proton has set out a six-month product roadmap that puts migration tools at the centre of its next update cycle, with the clearest aim being to make it easier for people to leave Google’s ecosystem. The Swiss privacy company says it wants switching away from Big Tech services to feel less like a manual project and more like a managed transition, with Gmail and Google Drive the immediate priorities.
The most notable change is to Proton Mail’s Easy Switch process. Proton already allowed users to bring in a Gmail inbox through a browser, but the next version will extend that capability into the mobile apps. That should let people connect a Gmail account inside Proton Mail, continue sending and receiving messages there, and move email across without being tied to a desktop web workflow. Technology sites including TechSpot and Android Central reported that the feature is designed to make migration less disruptive by keeping Gmail communication available while users gradually move contacts and conversations to Proton.
Proton Drive is also due for a simpler handover from Google Drive. At present, users need to download files from Google’s cloud storage and upload them again into Proton. The new approach will allow direct account linking, which removes the need for that intermediate step. As PCWorld noted, that kind of bridge is useful because storage migration is often the slowest part of moving away from Google, particularly for people who have years of documents, photos and shared folders spread across Drive. Geekchamp and MobileStalk both observed that mail, contacts and calendars are already easier to move than Drive content, which is why file migration remains a more awkward hurdle.
The roadmap also points to broader account management changes. Proton said it wants to make it easier to link services where users originally signed up with an external address and later created a Proton Mail account. Today, that often requires manual account consolidation. In the company’s telling, the aim is to reduce friction for people who adopted Proton VPN, Proton Drive or Proton Pass before switching their primary email identity into Proton’s own mail service.
Search is another area where Proton is promising visible improvement. The mobile Proton Mail apps are due to gain content search, which means users should be able to look inside message bodies rather than relying only on subjects or sender details. Proton says the privacy protections remain intact, although it has not explained the implementation in detail. The company is making similar changes for Proton Drive, where users will eventually be able to search within file contents despite the complications of end-to-end encryption.
Elsewhere in the roadmap, Proton said it plans a redesigned VPN app for Linux, iOS, macOS and Android TV, as well as an API, improved mobile apps and a desktop app for its Lumo AI chatbot. Proton Pass is also set to receive folders and safer one-time login sharing. The company has not published firm release dates, only saying the changes should arrive over the next six months.
