Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S23 series will receive its final major software update with One UI 9.0, concluding its Android 13 and One UI 5.1 journey, while support continues with security patches for up to five years.
Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S23 family will end its major software journey with One UI 9.0, closing the loop on a promise made when the phones launched in 2023 with Android 13 and One UI 5.1. That applies across the line-up: the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S23 FE. A screenshot shared by Tarun Vats on X, and later analysed by Samsung-focused outlets, indicates that Samsung support has told users the next Android 17-based release will be the final big update for the series.
The decision appears consistent with Samsung’s original policy for the S23 range, which was four generations of major Android upgrades. The phones have already moved through three large OS updates and are now running One UI 8.5. One UI 9.0 would therefore complete the company’s stated commitment rather than exceed it. SamMobile has reported that this is why One UI 9 is being treated as the end point for the 2023 flagship generation.
Samsung is also already testing One UI 9.0 internally for the Galaxy S23 line, according to firmware findings reported by SamMobile. The build spotted on Samsung’s servers suggests work is under way, even though a public rollout has not begun. Samsung has said One UI 9 is based on Android 17, and broader reporting on the software indicates the update is expected to bring only modest visual changes, along with Galaxy AI refinements, improved parental controls and general Android 17 changes.
The end of major updates does not mean the devices will stop receiving support altogether. According to the reports, Samsung will continue issuing security patches for a fifth year, giving owners time to keep using the phones without missing routine protection updates. That mirrors the wider pattern in Samsung’s update policy, under which devices that have completed their promised operating system cycle remain on security-only support for a period before ageing out of the programme.
