Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 11 version 26H2 promises a modest refresh with new customization options, smarter search features, and extended support, arriving in late 2026 as a lightweight upgrade.
Microsoft’s next annual Windows 11 update is shaping up as a modest but useful refresh rather than a major overhaul. Windows 11 version 26H2 is expected to arrive in the second half of 2026, likely around September or October, and Microsoft plans to deliver it as a lightweight enablement package for PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2, which should mean a fast installation and only one restart, according to Windows Central and WindowsLatest.
The biggest user-facing changes are aimed at long-standing complaints about customisation. Reporting from Windows Central says Microsoft is preparing to let people move the taskbar to any edge of the screen, while also offering a smaller taskbar layout. The Start menu is also expected to gain size presets and more control over sections such as Pinned, Recent and All apps, along with a privacy option to hide account details during screen sharing.
Search appears to be getting a cleaner design and smarter local results, with better ranking for apps and files and, crucially, a switch to disable web results for those who want a local-only experience. PCWorld reported that Microsoft is also testing an optional “Ask Copilot” search replacement, while Windows Central says deeper Copilot integration is coming to Search and File Explorer, alongside a redesigned Run dialog and other small interface updates.
Under the hood, Microsoft is keeping the release line simple. Hardware requirements are not expected to change, support will continue for current Windows 11 systems already on the same platform, and the update is being positioned as part of Microsoft’s standard annual cadence. WindowsLatest reports that Home and Pro editions are slated for 24 months of support, while Enterprise and Education editions will receive 36 months, extending the life of 26H2 systems into 2028 and 2029.
