Wine 11.19 enhances Wayland support with colour management and addresses 23 bugs

The latest Wine update introduces advanced colour management for Vulkan on Wayland, supports Unicode 18, and fixes multiple bugs affecting popular games and tools, marking a significant step in compatibility and performance.

Wine 11.19 has been released as the latest update to the compatibility layer used to run Windows applications and games on Linux and other Unix-like systems. The new build adds support for vertical text in GDIPlus, refreshes Wine’s Unicode tables to Unicode 18.0, introduces DNS query caching to cut repeated hostname look-ups, and brings further work to the VBScript parser, according to the WineHQ release announcement and coverage from Phoronix.

The release also extends Wine’s graphics work on Wayland. Phoronix reports that the Wine Wayland driver now implements the colour management protocol for Vulkan colour spaces, a change intended to improve colour accuracy for Windows software and games running under Wayland. That sits alongside the broader set of compatibility updates that continue to define Wine’s point releases, where incremental rendering, text and scripting improvements are paired with targeted fixes for real-world applications.

Wine 11.19 addresses 23 reported bugs affecting games, developer tools and Wine’s own components. The fixes include a startup crash in ArcGIS Pro, a launch failure in Euro Truck Simulator 2 when using the OpenGL renderer with Wine’s EGL backend, and problems in Desperados 2: Cooper’s Revenge, Final Fantasy XI Online and Zombie Army 4: Dead War. Other corrections cover Paint.NET 5.2, Wine Notepad, .NET Framework 4.8 decimal rounding, BOINC, MSYS2, XInput handling, OpenCL compilation, QuickTime 2 under winevdm and a regression that could trigger freezes or deadlocks during msvc-wine builds, according to the official notes.

WineHQ said the release also removes a delay in wineboot that could add roughly five seconds to startup on Linux and macOS in some cases. The source code is available now, with binary packages expected to follow through WineHQ and the relevant distribution repositories.
