xAI’s Grok Imagine Image 2.0 shifts focus to precise editing with new tools and competitive ranking

xAI has launched Grok Imagine Image 2.0, a major update that emphasises editing capabilities over simple image generation, featuring advanced tools and improved performance in arena rankings.

xAI has released Grok Imagine Image 2.0, making the model generally available as the Quality Mode option on grok.com/imagine and in the company’s iOS and Android apps, according to the company’s announcement on August 7, 2026. The update is built around editing rather than simple image generation. It adds a magic wand for local changes, segmentation tools for selecting exact areas, background removal for transparent exports and support for up to five reference images in a single prompt. xAI also says the model can recompose one image across nine aspect ratios, from tall mobile formats to wide display banners, while preserving the subject and filling in the new frame.

The company says Image 2.0 was trained to perform across photography, design and illustration, with particular attention to typography, layout and small text. It has also introduced preset workflows for product photography, headshots, e-commerce listings, game assets and marketing posters, which are intended to reduce setup time for common jobs. In its own Arena rankings, xAI says Image 2.0 is now second in both text-to-image generation and image editing, with OpenAI’s gpt-image-2 holding first place in each category. The company notes that its models are listed under the SpaceXAI name on Arena, and says API access is coming soon without giving a date.
