YouTube has expanded its Ask YouTube tool across desktop, mobile and connected TV, allowing US viewers to search through open-ended questions and follow-up prompts.
YouTube has extended its AI-powered Ask YouTube search tool to all US users, bringing conversational search to desktop, mobile and Connected TV. The feature, first tested in 2023, is designed to let viewers pose more detailed questions, narrow results with follow-up prompts and receive answers in an interactive format. YouTube says the system is intended to make discovery feel more natural, including for users searching by voice from a television or phone.
The rollout gives YouTube one of its most visible AI additions so far and reflects a wider move towards chat-based discovery. Rather than relying only on keywords, the tool is built around open-ended prompts, allowing users to explore subjects in more depth and move between related topics without restarting a search. That matters on a platform where video discovery often depends on surfacing context, not just individual titles.
The expansion also fits a broader shift in consumer behaviour. Pew Research Centre said about half of US adults now use AI chatbots, up from one-third in 2024, and its 2026 findings show the strongest use among adults under 50, though adoption is rising across age groups. For YouTube, that makes conversational search less of an experiment and more of an expected feature, as large platforms race to fold generative AI into everyday navigation.
