Retailers cut the price of Apple’s latest over-ear headphones to the lowest level yet, amid anticipation of a new in-ear lineup and ongoing market competition.
Amazon and Best Buy have cut the price of Apple’s latest over-ear headphones to one of the strongest levels yet, with AirPods Max 2 now listed at $429, or $120 below the standard $549 price. According to 9to5Mac, the discount is currently available across all five colour options at Best Buy, while Amazon is matching the reduced price on selected stock. The timing is notable because Apple is widely expected to refresh its in-ear lineup soon, which may keep pressure on current AirPods pricing.
The AirPods Max 2 are not a mere cosmetic update. Apple’s support material says the model, introduced in 2026, includes the H2 chip, a custom high dynamic range amplifier, Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, personalised volume adjustment, loud sound reduction, personalised spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, adaptive EQ and USB-C lossless audio. MacRumors reported that Apple’s 2026 update kept the same broad design, but added these audio and software features through the newer chip and processing improvements.
That makes the current discount more significant than a routine clearance offer. Apple launched pre-orders at $549 in March 2026, with availability beginning in early April, and the same pricing has been used in subsequent retail listings, according to MacRumors. SoundGuys also noted a separate deal at $449, but the latest $429 price is lower and brings the headphones closer to premium rivals in the same category. For buyers who want Apple’s deepest integration with the iPhone and other Apple devices, the lower price improves the case for buying now rather than waiting for a further drop.
The wider AirPods market is also unusually active. 9to5Mac said AirPods Pro 3 are now near their best pricing yet, while AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation have fallen to their lowest level in almost six months. That broader pattern suggests retailers are clearing space ahead of any new Apple audio products, leaving shoppers with a short window in which current-generation AirPods models are being sold at unusually aggressive discounts.
