Audioengine refreshes A2+ desktop speakers with USB-C upgrade and high-res support

Audioengine unveils the A2+ Gen 3, enhancing its popular compact desktop speakers with a USB-C connection, support for 24-bit/96kHz audio, and modern connectivity while retaining its iconic small format.

Audioengine has updated its compact desktop speaker line again, unveiling the A2+ Gen 3 as the latest evolution of its best-known small speaker system. The company says the new model keeps the same nearfield format that made the range popular for desks, bedrooms and small listening spaces, while adding a more capable digital stage and modern connectivity. According to Gear Patrol, the change follows the A2+ Next Gen launched earlier in 2025, which itself was presented as a successor to the 2019 A2+ Wireless.

The hardware remains familiar. Audioengine says each cabinet uses a 0.75-inch silk-dome tweeter paired with a 2.75-inch aramid-fibre woofer, with the system tuned for desktop and compact-room use. Its published specifications list a frequency response of 65Hz to 22kHz, which is typical for a speaker of this size and suggests that deep bass will still depend on placement or a subwoofer.

The main revision is in the input stage. Audioengine now says the A2+ Gen 3 uses a USB-C connection and supports up to 24-bit, 96kHz audio, improving on the older USB-B interface found on earlier versions, which was limited to 16-bit, 48kHz playback. The speaker set also retains Bluetooth and analogue inputs, including 3.5mm and RCA, making it suitable for use with laptops, turntables and other entry-level sources. Audioengine also lists a subwoofer output, extending the system for users who want more low-end weight.

For buyers, the appeal is still the same: a compact powered speaker pair that aims to combine convenience with genuine hi-fi credentials. The A2+ line has long been positioned as a versatile option for smaller spaces, and Audioengine’s latest update appears designed less to reinvent the product than to keep it relevant in a market now dominated by USB-C laptops and higher-resolution streaming sources.
