Bose introduces second-generation Ultra Open Earbuds and new Sport Open Earbuds, emphasising situational awareness and enhanced AI-driven call quality, with launches set for October in Japan.
Bose has expanded its open-ear line-up with two new clip-style wireless earbuds, positioning both models around situational awareness rather than noise cancellation. The new Ultra Open Earbuds, now in their second generation, are the company’s premium option, while the Sport Open Earbuds are aimed at exercise and outdoor use. Both models are already available for pre-order in Japan, with launch dates of 1 October for the Ultra model and 15 October for the Sport version, according to Bose’s announcement and Japanese coverage of the launch.
The second-generation Ultra Open Earbuds build on the model Bose released in 2024, which helped popularise the open-ear category. Bose says the latest version uses a new driver to raise volume and strengthen bass, while its OpenAudio system is designed to keep sound private without sealing the ear. The company also says call quality has improved through updated voice pickup and SpeechClarity, an AI-based system that separates the wearer’s voice from background noise. Battery life rises to as much as nine hours, with the charging case adding further runtime and now supporting wireless charging.
The Sport Open Earbuds are a separate model and not merely a variant of the Ultra design. Bose describes them as a product for movement and training, using a C-shaped cuff intended to sit securely outside the ear. The company says the earbuds are built for comfort during longer wear, with IP54-rated resistance against sweat and light rain. Runtime is rated at seven hours, and the case extends that further. Like the Ultra model, they include SpeechClarity and automatic volume adjustment, which Bose says adapts playback to ambient noise.
Across both products, Bose is pushing the same core idea: open listening that keeps the user aware of traffic, colleagues or other environmental sounds. That puts the new models in a growing segment that sits between standard in-ear earbuds and bone-conduction designs. Bose is also leaning on newer wireless features, including Bluetooth 5.4, multipoint pairing and Google Fast Pair, alongside app-based controls for functions such as Spotify Tap and voice assistant access. The Ultra Open Earbuds come in five colours, while the Sport Open Earbuds are offered in three, underscoring Bose’s attempt to give the category both premium and sports-focused appeal.
