The Fairbuds 2 add LDAC, longer battery life and seven replaceable parts while launching at €119, undercutting the first-generation model.
Fairphone has unveiled the Fairbuds 2, a redesigned pair of wireless earphones that the Dutch company says are smaller, lighter and easier to repair than before, while also offering longer battery life and a lower launch price than the first generation.
The new model shifts to a stemmed design, but Fairphone says the earbuds are still 37 per cent smaller than the previous stemless version. The charging case has also been reduced in size. According to Fairphone’s product page, the earphones use 11mm bio-cellulose drivers and add support for Sony’s LDAC codec, which should allow higher-quality wireless audio than the SBC and AAC support offered by the earlier model.
Battery life has also improved. Fairphone says the Fairbuds 2 can last up to eight hours with active noise cancellation switched off, or six hours with it enabled. That is an increase over the original Fairbuds, which were rated for six hours without noise cancellation and five hours with it. The company also claims up to 40 hours of total playback when the charging case is included.
Repairability remains the defining feature. Fairphone says the Fairbuds 2 are built around seven replaceable parts, including the 45mAh battery and the ear tips. The earbuds carry an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance, support Bluetooth 6.0 and can connect to two devices at once through multipoint pairing. Fairphone also says the earbuds come with a three-year warranty.
The launch price is €119 in Europe, or $119.99 in the US, which is lower than the €149 asking price of the original Fairbuds at launch two years ago. Android Central reported that the new model is set to arrive on 14 October, while other industry coverage said Fairphone has kept the repair-first approach at the centre of the product, allowing users to replace individual components rather than the entire set.
