Fairphone is set to release its second-generation Fairbuds 2, featuring fully modular parts and enhanced wireless audio capabilities including support for Sony’s LDAC codec, aiming to appeal to both repair-conscious consumers and audio enthusiasts.
Fairphone is preparing a second generation of its modular wireless earbuds, keeping repairability at the centre of the design while moving the product closer to the mainstream shape of rival premium models. The company has told The Verge that the Fairbuds 2 will retain seven fully replaceable and modular parts, an uncommon level of serviceability in a category where most earbuds are sealed units designed for replacement rather than repair.
The new model is also set to gain a more capable wireless audio specification. Fairphone says the Fairbuds 2 will support Sony’s LDAC codec, which is designed to carry higher-resolution audio than the SBC and AAC codecs used by the original Fairbuds. For buyers who care about audio quality as well as longevity, that is a notable technical upgrade, particularly because it broadens compatibility with devices that can take advantage of higher-bitrate Bluetooth playback.
Leaked images published by technology sites earlier this month suggested a more conventional stemmed silhouette, replacing the stemless look of the first generation. Those images also pointed to a taller charging case, which could indicate a larger battery, although Fairphone has not confirmed that detail. Reports from Android Authority, GSMArena and Gizmochina also suggested the earbuds may arrive in green and black, but the company has not publicly confirmed colour options or the final industrial design.
Fairphone says a full announcement is scheduled for 14 October, with the earbuds due to go on sale first in Europe for €119 and later in the United States for $119. That would make the new model cheaper at launch than the first Fairbuds, which debuted in 2024 at €149 before later falling to $99.99 in the US. The pricing suggests Fairphone is trying to keep its repairable audio range competitive as it expands beyond the niche audience that typically seeks out modular electronics.
