Lexar launches the Muse, a ultrathin portable SSD featuring a proprietary magnetic PogoPin interface and supporting direct external recording on iPhone Pro models, marking a significant design milestone for mobile storage solutions.
Lexar has unveiled the Muse, a portable SSD it says is the thinnest of its kind, with a body that narrows to 1mm at the edges and reaches only 3.8mm at its thickest point. The company says the drive measures 80 x 48 x 3.8mm overall and uses a single-piece metal enclosure, a custom ultra-thin PCB, compressed housing and tapered edges to achieve the design.
The most unusual element is connectivity. Rather than a conventional USB-C socket, the Muse relies on Lexar’s proprietary PogoPin magnetic interface and a supplied SnapLink Magnetic cable that attaches to the rear of the drive. Lexar says the cable transfers data at up to 1,050MB/s for reads and 1,000MB/s for writes, with the other end terminating in standard USB-C.
That performance places the Muse well below the fastest external SSDs, but it is still quick enough for demanding mobile workflows. Lexar and technology sites including The Verge note that it can support direct external recording of Apple ProRes 4K video at up to 120fps on compatible iPhone Pro models, making it more practical as a capture and working drive than as a top-end benchmark product.
Lexar says the Muse will ship in 512GB and 1TB versions from the fourth quarter of 2026, with pricing still to be announced. Tom’s Hardware reports that the launch marks Lexar’s 30th anniversary, while the company’s positioning suggests the product is aimed squarely at users who value extreme thinness and magnetic phone mounting over raw speed or conventional port compatibility.
