SanDisk’s magnetic SSD turns an iPhone into a more practical ProRes filming rig

The SanDisk Creator Phone SSD offers fast, durable external storage for high-resolution smartphone video, but its specialist price and compatibility limits make it a tool for serious mobile creators rather than everyday users.

The SanDisk Creator Phone SSD is a reminder that modern smartphones are no longer just handsets; for many users they are also primary video tools. In a market where mobile creators regularly shoot long clips in high resolution, the appeal of keeping fast external storage close to the phone is obvious. The drive is pitched as a more practical answer to that workflow than a conventional portable SSD, especially for people who want to record without immediately filling internal storage. Reuters-style reviews from several technology publications suggest that this is the device’s central selling point: it is designed not simply as extra capacity, but as part of a phone-based production setup.

SanDisk has clearly shaped the hardware around that use case. The drive arrives in a curved silicone body with rubberised edges, weighs 54g and is 11mm thick, and includes a lanyard loop for travel or filming. Its magnetic attachment is the most distinctive element, letting it cling to MagSafe-compatible iPhones, while SanDisk also supplies a magnetic ring for laptop-screen mounting. That convenience is helpful, but not complete: the magnetic hold and the data link remain separate, so the cable still has to be managed when changing positions or handling the phone. That practical limitation is one reason reviewers have treated the design as clever, but not flawless.

The bigger attraction is direct recording. According to Macworld and Cult of Mac, the SSD supports external Apple ProRes capture on compatible iPhones, including high-resolution 4K ProRes workflows, which gives the product a clear purpose beyond generic file storage. TechRadar said the USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface delivers transfer rates of up to 1,000MB/s, making it suitable for sustained video work where speed matters. That said, the feature set is not universal: buyers need to confirm that their phone and camera setup support external recording, and the relevant option must be enabled in the camera settings before use.

Compatibility is broad on paper, but not unlimited in practice. SanDisk says the drive uses exFAT and supports Windows 10 or later, macOS 14 or later, iOS 17 or later, iPadOS 17 or later and Android 14 or later. The company also points to its Memory Zone software for file management, although reviewers note that not every recording feature works across all phones. For buyers who simply want compact everyday transfer storage, SanDisk’s Extreme Fit USB-C flash drive offers a cheaper alternative with up to 1TB capacity and read speeds of up to 400MB/s, but without the magnetic mounting or creator-focused recording workflow.

Durability is another strong point. The Creator Phone SSD carries an IP65 rating for dust resistance and protection against water jets, and SanDisk says it can withstand drops from up to three metres. That makes it better suited to outdoor shoots and travel than many basic portable drives, although IP65 does not mean waterproof. The five-year limited warranty and one-month Adobe Creative Cloud offer add some value, but they are secondary to the main question of whether a creator actually needs this kind of drive. On price, the answer will depend on the workflow: the 1TB model is listed at Rs 24,000 and the 2TB version at Rs 36,000, which places it firmly in specialist territory rather than everyday storage.

In practice, the SanDisk Creator Phone SSD makes most sense for mobile videographers who regularly shoot large files and want external storage that stays physically close to the handset. It is less compelling for ordinary users, who may find the price, cabling and device-specific limitations too hard to justify. For the right creator, though, it is a focused and well-judged tool: one that turns a smartphone into a more workable recording rig, provided the phone itself is compatible.
