The latest episode of Smart Home Insider highlights a surge in products promoting simplified control and interoperability, from Apple HomeKit enhancements to specialised displays and security gadgets, signalling a significant shift towards more integrated smart home ecosystems.
This week’s Smart Home Insider podcast focused on a run of new products that reflect where the smart home market is heading: simpler control software, wider platform compatibility and more hardware that is trying to work across Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and Matter. The episode also underlined a clear theme in the segment: manufacturers are increasingly packaging convenience features, such as dashboards and local control, into products that still depend on a careful setup. HomeDesk for HomeKit is one example. It turns an iPad or Apple TV into a smart home control panel, with access to cameras, weather data and household status information, plus an ambient mode that adds items such as family calendars. The app is sold as a one-time purchase rather than a subscription.
Leviton’s latest Decora smart dimmer and switch follow the same broad direction, with native Matter-over-Wi-Fi support designed to make them easier to use across different platforms. According to Leviton’s product information, they can work with My Leviton, Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home, and they support wired or wireless 3-way setups. The trade-off is practical rather than technical: both devices require a neutral wire, which limits compatibility in older homes where that wiring is often absent.
The episode also covered FlightPortrait, a preorder e-ink frame aimed at aviation enthusiasts. Its Spectra-6 colour display can show aircraft passing overhead in real time while rendering them as old-style airline posters. The product also includes open-source software, which should appeal to users who want to customise it beyond the default presentation. It sits alongside a growing class of decorative smart displays, but its airline theme gives it a far more specific identity than most.
The review section then turned to three devices with a more direct impact on everyday use. The Schlage Sense Pro is positioned as only the second real ultra-wideband smart lock to reach the market, and it uses Thread for connectivity while supporting Apple Home Key. Twelve South has updated its Valet charging tray with 25W wireless charging and a smaller footprint, making it more suited to bedside tables and desks. Hisense’s new dehumidifier is notable for bringing Matter support to the category, although the device currently appears to some ecosystems as a fan rather than as a true dehumidifier, which limits how cleanly it is identified in software.
