Amazon to build $100m robotics plant as it brings automation manufacturing in-house

The 585,000-square-foot Greenwood facility is expected to create 300 skilled jobs and begin operations by 2028, strengthening Amazon’s US robotics supply chain.

Amazon is moving further into industrial manufacturing with a new robotics-focused plant in Greenwood, Indiana, as it looks to bring more of its automation supply chain in-house. According to an announcement from the company, the site will require an investment of more than $100 million and will be built as a 585,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility.

The company says the plant is intended to support its fulfilment and robotics network across North America, rather than operate as a warehouse. It is due to create about 300 skilled jobs, including engineering and manufacturing roles, with an average salary of nearly $100,000. Amazon says the facility should begin operations by 2028. According to the company, the Greenwood site adds to its long-running presence in Indiana, where it says it has invested more than $40 billion and created over 27,000 jobs since 2008.

Industry coverage of the project indicates that the factory will combine fabrication, robotic welding, automated powder coating and assembly under one roof. Reports also say the operation will be supported by cloud and AI-enabled manufacturing systems, reflecting Amazon’s effort to tighten control over the production of automation hardware used in its logistics network. One report says the broader ambition is to increase the company’s robot-making capacity, following a similar expansion in Austin, Texas.

The move underscores how Amazon’s robotics strategy has evolved from deploying warehouse automation to building more of the underlying equipment itself. Amazon has already installed more than one million robots across its fulfilment network, according to technology industry reports, and the Greenwood plant appears designed to strengthen that supply chain while deepening the company’s manufacturing footprint in the United States.
