Industry experts forecast a significant leap in foldable smartphone shipments in 2026, driven by Apple’s anticipated launch of the iPhone Ultra and Samsung’s Galaxy Z8 series, marking a major turning point for the segment.

Foldable smartphones are poised for a sharper rise in 2026, with industry watchers pointing to Apple’s expected entry and Samsung’s refreshed Galaxy Z8 range as the main drivers. According to DigiTimes, total foldable shipments could climb by about 20% year on year, marking one of the segment’s strongest periods yet.

Much of the attention is on Apple’s first foldable, widely referred to as the iPhone Ultra, which is expected to arrive in September 2026. MacRumours reported that the device is set to use a flexible display and Apple’s A18 chip, positioning it as a high-end entrant into a market long dominated by rivals. Some reports suggest Apple plans to make around 10 million units in its first year, although early supply may be tight if the launch slips or stock is constrained.

Samsung is also expected to remain central to the market’s expansion. SamMobile, Tom’s Guide and TechRadar have reported that the Galaxy Z8 line, especially the Galaxy Z8 Fold, introduces a broader internal format aimed at improving productivity and media use. The device is said to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and include a 50-megapixel main camera, with prices starting at $1,899. That combination gives Samsung a stronger commercial base as the category widens.

Taken together, the two launches could make 2026 a turning point for foldables. Apple’s entry would give the segment a new mass-market reference point, while Samsung’s continued refinement of its devices should help keep the category visible in premium smartphones.
